Research Project Literally Opens Doors

Joseph Roman, Verrazzano Class of 2020, completed major in Engineering Science

My Capstone project was the Islide, or an automatic door using facial recognition. My project consisted of using code and my engineering skills to produce a working and fun design.

During the creation of this project there were some hiccups. The webcam I was using which was called the ESP-32 Cam broke, and the lens became unusable. I could not order a new cam and had to come up with a new idea.

I also had issues with coding my project. The code I was using would not allow the "door" to move with facial recognition. I had to figure out a solution to my problem as my project could not progress without this ability.

I decided to research and found my solution which was using a program known as python. Python is an extremely helpful program that lets you run code and use facial recognition. This allowed me to learn and study the use of code and how the code applied to my project as a whole.

With this code my project allowed my automatic door to move with the recognition of my face. My project was successful and taught me about the trail and errors of creating and designing.

My yearlong project proved to me how hard work can pay off and allowed me to work through a project to the end!
