Infertility and it's Effects on Female Patients

Arianna DiBenedetto, Verrazzano Class of 2020, Completed major in Nursing

As a nursing major, I decided to submit a research paper on a nursing-related topic to give me a better understanding of a specific health condition. The health condition I decided to dedicate my research to is infertility.

One of my classes was Maternal Nursing. In this class, I learned about the role of nurses through the birthing process and various pregnancy-related health conditions. One of the topics I learned in the course was infertility, which is the inability to conceive a child. We only touched upon this topic briefly because there is not as much concern regarding this medical diagnosis compared to other pregnancy-related health conditions, such as pre eclampsia or postpartum hemorrhage. This gave me the idea to conduct further research regarding infertility, and how it affects the female client.

After conducting research, I found that this health condition has a significant impact on female clients psychosocially, socioeconomically, and culturally. These women alter their everyday activities, face religious and cultural challenges, experience a variety of emotions, and endure financial burden after being diagnosed with infertility.

In society, people may take the ability to conceive a child for granted. My research on this topic can help educate people and give them a better understanding of this diagnosis, and how it affects female clients. I feel that after completing this research, I have more knowledge regarding this misunderstood condition, and as a future nurse, I will be able to use this knowledge to provide better care to my patients.
